The NTI-tss : the reduction of parafunctional symptoms and influence on sleep disorders Abstract The masticatory musculature as well as derangements of the temporo mandibular joint (commonly referred to as temporo-mandibular joint disorders TMD) are frequent sources for orofacial pain. Parafunctional activity is one important risk factor for the appearance of symptoms linked to TMD. The Evidence based Medecine (EbM) approach) has been able to demonstrate the effectiveness of occlusal splint as one of the therapeutical options. A new type of occlusal splint, the anterior point stop NTI-tss has recently reached increasing popularity amongst dental practitioners. Supported by several randomised controlled studies and approved by the FDA for the prevention and treatment of TMD as well as migraine and tension type headaches the NTI-tss reduces the muscle contraction linked to the parafunctional activity by 70%. The indication for the NTI-tss include head and facial pain, and for some patients, tension type headaches and migraine pain can be significantly reduced with this simple and economic device. Furthermore the dentist can use the NTI-tss as a protective device against occlusal trauma and bruxism in periodontal, orthodontic and implant cases. At the end of the presentation the author will offer a short overview on the known interactions between TMD and sleep disorders. |
